A major new series out of New York, Wordless Music is devoted to the idea that the sound worlds of classical and contemporary instrumental music – in genres such as indie rock and electronica – share more in common than conventional thinking might suggest. The series pairs rock and electronic musicians in an intimate concert setting with more traditionally understood classical and chamber music performers.
Concert 4: Jóhann Jóhannsson
Winner of the 2009 Icelandic Music Awards “Album of the Year” and “one of the most intelligently exciting things to have come from Iceland in recent years” (Manchester Music), composer
Jóhann Jóhannsson makes his U.S. debut in the critically acclaimed Wordless Music Series (New York City and Minneapolis). With string quartet, percussion, piano and organ, Jóhannsson will perform works from his masterful solo albums as well as new arrangements. This exclusive concert experience at the Southern Theater promises to be “a symphony of astonishing drama and exquisite lryicism” (Irish Times), a moving, beautiful and ultimately heartbreaking listen.
“...such haunting, swelling and astounding beauty that it makes Sigur Rós sound like Whigfield.”
– The London Paper (on the music of Jóhannsson)
Opening music by Minneapolis-based drummer and electronic musician
Tarlton.
“[Tarlton] uses rythmic improvisation to not only propel but accentuate his music, hooking dizzying time signatures into looped and sequenced soundscapes.”
– City Pages
