| Artists
and audience walking into the Southern Theater for the first time
are immediately captivated by its intimate, moody ambiance. The
walls and proscenium arch have been allowed to age gracefully, with
the original murals still appearing in a state of "artful decay."
While the Southern has made every effort to retain the historic
beauty of its space, the audience seating area is newly remodeled
with an eye towards blending comfort with its unique aesthetic.
The result: one of the most exquisite theaters in the Twin Cities
that is considered "home" to many of the area's best performing
artists.
The following photos provide a variety of perspectives both inside
and outside the theater. For more specific technical information,

NOTE:
all photos of the playing area are taken with a marley dance floor
down. Furnishings at upstage right (as well as music stands, microphones,
and grand piano) are temporary installations for one particular
production.

original proscenium arch, which we refer to as "the proscenium,"
acts as a backdrop to the primary playing area while "framing"
the upstage space.

the next two photos are taken from onstage; audience sightlines
do not extend so far offstage behind the proscenium arch.)
